Colorado Carbon Monoxide Law
July 1, 2009

On March 24, 2009 Governer Ritter enacted the new Colorado carbon monoxide law to come in to effect on July 1, 2009. It applies to single family homes that are sold, remodeled or used as rentals. All multifamily dwellings will need come into compliance on July 1, 2009. The new law can be found here...

These events prompted the legislator to act:

Over the Thanksgiving weekend 2008, a family of four were found dead in a house near Aspen. In early January another tragedy occurred when a collage student died in her 3rd floor apartment due to a faulty boiler vent. The vent appears to have been damaged in a wind storm underscoring the need to have a warning device in all dwellings.

Carbon monoxide is a colorless and odorless gas that can produce flu like symptoms that can quickly lead to complete confusion and unconscious. Even at lower levels were death may not occur serious long term health effects may result.Unintentional carbon monoxide exposure accounts for an estimated 15,000 emergency department visits and 500 unintentional deaths each year.
